For many years, Holy Cross and Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Greenwood have jointly sponsored and staffed a food distribution program on the Holy Cross property. The "Bread Fund" is a partner agency with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, which supplies most of the nonperishable food and all the meat and fresh produce that is distributed. Over the course of a 12-month period, hundreds of households representing over a thousand individuals are offered nutritious food at no cost. Volunteers assemble the food items for clients to pick-up on the first Saturday of each month. During the 2020 pandemic, this program has been expanded to the occur also on the third Saturday of each month. The Bread Fund is a well-known local resource for many in need.
Warm Clothing Distribution
Holy Cross and Emmanuel Episcopal Church (Greenwood) co-host a warm clothing distribution during the months of November and December. Starting in the autumn, volunteers from each church solicit contributions within their congregations, western Albemarle County and northern Nelson County. Several local business establishments host collection bins, and donors are consistently generous. The distribution is scheduled to coincide with the first Saturday food pantry distribution dates in November and December, and volunteers assist customers with their selections of coats, snow pants, sweaters, hats, scarves, gloves and socks. More than 900 items were handed out to people in the community during each of the past several years, with excess inventory donated to a shelter in the Waynesboro area. The circumstances in 2020 have required that we minimize the in-person distribution to our November food distribution date and limit the number of shoppers accessing the facility. We are expanding our outreach in December to provide Bread Fund clients with $10 gift certificates to purchase items at the Rockfish Valley Community Center Treasure Chest Thrift Shop.
Holy Cross is the beneficiary of a generous annual gift from the trust of John Owen Higginson to be used for the church's outreach programs. A committee of church members receives requests for assistance from organizations or families in the community and makes disbursement of funds as agreed by the committee to an average annual total of $18,000. During 2020 we have made donations to numerous organizations, including the North Garden Fire Department, Rockfish Valley Volunteer Department, Crozet Volunteer Fire Department, Nelson County Pantry, Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity, Shelter for Help in Emergency, Boys Home of Virginia, Western Albemarle Rescue Squad, Hospice of the Piedmont, School House Thrift Shop, Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle, Afton Christian School, and Valley Mission, Inc.
Under the direction of organist Raven Hunter, our choir sings traditional, modern, and folk music. Rehearsals are Wednesdays at 7pm. We get together for dinner and fellowship as well. Join us!
